About the Region

The Harbour Region in Malta, encompassing localities such as Birgu, Cospicua, Isla, Kalkara, Valletta, Floriana, Xghajra, Zabbar, Fgura, Paola, and Tarxien, is a captivating area that combines a rich maritime history, historical sites, and picturesque waterfronts. This region offers a unique blend of cultural heritage and scenic beauty.

With the Grand Harbour as Malta’s main port, surrounded by iconic fortifications, visitors can enjoy stunning views of Valletta and the surrounding cities. The Cospicua Waterfront provides a charming area for leisurely walks and dining, while Kalkara offers beautiful harbor views and is home to the Kalkara Marina, catering to boats and yachts.

The historical significance and strategic position of the Harbour Region have shaped its development and contributed to its cultural heritage. Forts, fortifications, and historical landmarks serve as enduring symbols of its strategic importance throughout history. Today, the region thrives as a hub of economic activities, tourism, and cultural preservation.

However, the Harbour Region also faces challenges related to urbanism. Limited space and urban expansion can strain existing infrastructure and resources, leading to increased traffic congestion. Meeting the growing demand for infrastructure and services is another challenge, while preserving the region’s historical and cultural heritage requires careful urban planning and conservation efforts. Additionally, providing affordable housing poses a challenge due to the rising property prices caused by the demand for housing in the region.

Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that includes urban planning, infrastructure development, conservation efforts, and community involvement. Embracing sustainable urban development practices, efficient transportation systems, affordable housing initiatives, and the preservation of cultural heritage are essential for creating a vibrant and liveable Harbour Region. The cultural and historical importance of the Harbour Region is evident in its architectural treasures, archaeological sites, religious landmarks, and maritime heritage. Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcases the capital city’s cultural significance. Fort St. Angelo, the Three Cities, the Tarxien Temples, and the Grand Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean, all contribute to the region’s rich heritage.

Preserving and promoting these cultural assets not only enhances the region’s appeal to visitors but also reinforces Malta’s identity and sense of history. The Harbour Region stands as a testament to Malta’s vibrant past and serves as a captivating destination for locals and tourists alike.

Message from the President

It is an honour to serve as your representative and work tirelessly to address the needs and aspirations of our community. Together, we have accomplished significant milestones and overcome numerous challenges, but our journey towards excellence is far from over.

I want to emphasize the importance of the region’s role as a link to coordinate and assist local councils in achieving strategic targets and fostering effective governance and sustainable development. Here are some key aspects of this role:

  1. Strategic Planning and Coordination: The region can play a vital role in developing strategic plans that align the goals and objectives of local councils with broader regional objectives. By facilitating coordination and collaboration among different councils, the region can ensure a cohesive approach to address common challenges and leverage shared resources.
  2. Ensuring an evolving identity of the region through some key aspects namely: history and heritage, cultural diversity, natural environment and community values and traditions
  3. Addresses environmental and cultural matters, cultural heritage conservation, sustainable tourism development, partnerships and collaboration and policy influence

In conclusion, let me embrace the strength of unity and collaboration. By standing together as one cohesive region, we can create a brighter, more prosperous future for ourselves and future generations.
